➖ Every safe surgical outcome depends on the coordinated expertise of OR professionals; surgeons, anaesthesia professionals, nurses, technicians, etc.
👥 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲
Safe surgery requires a functioning OR team. Yet the WFSA Global Anesthesia Workforce Survey reveals that 77 countries have fewer than 5 physician anaesthesia providers per 100,000 population – the minimum density for safe care. In the African region, the update estimates just 0.6 physician anaesthesia providers per 100,000.
Meanwhile, the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery recommends a minimum workforce density of 20 specialist surgical, anaesthesia, and obstetric (SAO) providers per 100,000 population. To meet this target, an estimated 1.27 million additional SAO providers are needed globally. The world requires over 136,000 additional anaesthesiologists to reach minimum workforce targets.
🏥 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗢𝗥 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹
The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery found that 5 billion people lack access to safe, affordable surgical and anaesthesia care. This reality affects operating rooms every day across low-resource settings.
An estimated 143 million additional surgical procedures are needed annually across LMICs, highlighting gaps in access to surgical care.
Five core barriers affect every OR role: workforce shortages, weak infrastructure, unreliable supply chains, financing gaps, and weak governance.
