🧑⚕️ Surgery is entering an increasingly digital era. Robotic platforms, AI, augmented reality, advanced imaging, 3D technologies, and smart operating rooms are changing how procedures are planned, performed, and evaluated. AI is emerging as a powerful layer connecting data, visualization, and decision support.
Digital surgery now spans advanced visualization, enhanced instruments with data capture, analytics, and robotic platforms. AI can analyse large volumes of clinical and operative data, while computer vision is being developed to recognise surgical phases, instruments, and anatomical structures.
Across the perioperative journey, these innovations can support more individualised patient care, from planning and risk assessment before surgery to precision during the procedure, and early recognition of complications afterward. Their value lies not in replacing the team but in providing better information for safe, coordinated care.
Other technologies are expanding this ecosystem. Augmented reality can overlay preoperative 3D anatomical information onto the operative field, while 3D printing supports patient-specific planning. Smart operating rooms integrate devices, data, and workflow into a connected environment.
However, technological capability does not automatically equal clinical benefit. Evidence remains uneven, while cost, infrastructure, data quality, cybersecurity, bias, and training can limit implementation. Responsible innovation requires strong evidence, governance, and equal access.
For global surgery, the goal is not simply to adopt newer technology but to ensure innovation improves patient care without widening inequalities.
