A visionary general surgeon and former Minister of Health, Dr. Rodas confronted a stark reality: in rural Ecuador, geography was a death sentence for those needing surgery. His solution wasn’t to wait for hospitals to be built, but to invent a new system entirely.

In the 1990s, Dr. Rodas pioneered the concept of Mobile Surgery Units. His most famous innovation, the “Sᴜɢɪᴄᴀʟ Bᴜs,” is a fully equipped, sterile operating room on wheels. The Cinterandes Foundation launched its Mobile Surgery Program, featuring a fully equipped operating room built into a truck. For over 31 years, this unit has traveled to the most remote regions of Ecuador – the Andes, the coast, and the Amazon – performing an average of 350 life-changing surgeries annually.

Impact: For thousands, the arrival of the bus meant a life-saving hernia repair, a timely C-section, or treatment for a traumatic injury that would have otherwise led to disability or death.
