Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women globally with over 2 million new cases. Limited health literacy, cultural barriers, and poor access to care often delay diagnosis, especially in low- and middle-income countries, resulting in advanced disease at presentation.
Surgery continues to be the cornerstone of breast cancer management, but traditional breast-conserving operations frequently leave visible cosmetic deformities.
𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 (𝗢𝗕𝗦) 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, combining oncologic precision with plastic surgical artistry.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗢𝗕𝗦 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁?
Traditional breast-conserving surgery (BCS) often leads to cosmetic deformities when large tissue volumes are removed or when tumours are located in difficult areas. OBS changes that.
By integrating oncologic and reconstructive techniques, surgeons can remove wider margins, ensuring cancer control, while reshaping the breast to maintain a natural appearance.
𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀:
• Volume-Displacement Techniques: The remaining breast tissue is mobilized and reshaped to fill the defect. Best suited for women with medium to large breasts.
• Volume-Replacement Techniques: Tissue from another area (flaps or grafts) is used to reconstruct the defect, ideal for smaller breasts or larger resections.
𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝘆:
Successful OBS requires multidisciplinary collaboration, involving the surgical oncologist, plastic surgeon, and radiologist. Preoperative imaging, marking, and symmetry planning for the opposite breast are crucial steps.

Studies, including Bertozzi et al. (2017, European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences), show that:
• Aesthetic failure rates drop to as low as 0–18% with OBS (vs. ~30% in standard BCS).
• Oncologic safety remains uncompromised, with lower positive margin rates and comparable recurrence rates.
• Patients report higher satisfaction and improved quality of life, both physically and emotionally.
