Call for Volunteers: TORG Global Education & Training Committee

The Operating Room Global Centre for Education, Research & Innovation (TORG) invites applications from committed professionals to join the TORG Global Education & Training Committee.

The committee provides strategic direction and operational support for TORG’s education and training activities at global and national levels, in alignment with TORG’s mission and values.

About the Committee

The Global Education & Training Committee oversees the planning, coordination, and delivery of TORG’s educational programmes. Members contribute to teaching, training delivery, academic engagement, and representation on behalf of TORG, working closely with TORG leadership, chapters, and partners.

Leadership

  • Committee Lead: Asst. Prof. Demeke Yilkal Fentie
  • The committee reports to the TORG Governing Board, Global Education & Training Directorate through established governance structures.

Who Should Apply

Applications are welcome from professionals with experience or strong interest in:

  • Operating room practice (surgery, anesthesia, perioperative nursing, allied health)
  • Health professions education and training
  • Curriculum and faculty development
  • Simulation, digital learning, or immersive technologies
  • Global health, surgical systems strengthening, or workforce development
  • Research, quality improvement, and implementation science
  • Professional education, leadership, advocacy, or policy

Applicants from all regions are encouraged. Representation from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is particularly welcomed.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should meet most of the following:

  • Demonstrated commitment to education, training, or capacity building
  • Relevant professional, academic, or leadership experience
  • Ability to work effectively within an international, multidisciplinary team
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills
  • Willingness to volunteer time and actively contribute
  • Availability to support activities at global and/or national levels

Previous involvement with TORG is an advantage but not required.

Committee Roles & Responsibilities

1. Committee Secretary

The Secretary will:

  • Coordinate and document monthly committee meetings
  • Prepare and circulate agendas, minutes, and action points
  • Support communication between committee members, leadership, and TORG
  • Maintain records of attendance, activities, and deliverables
  • Assist with scheduling webinars and official committee correspondence

2. Committee Members

Committee Members will:

  • Actively participate in monthly meetings and twice-monthly webinars
  • Contribute to the design, review, and delivery of education and training initiatives
  • Support curriculum development, teaching materials, and faculty activities
  • Chair or moderate sessions at TORG-led or partner events (global or national)
  • Serve as speakers, panelists, or facilitators for webinars, workshops, and conferences
  • Represent TORG at academic, professional, or stakeholder engagements when requested

Additional Responsibilities (All Members)

Members may also be involved in:

  • Monitoring and evaluation of education and training programmes
  • Supporting capacity building within TORG country chapters
  • Contributing to reports, policy briefs, or guidance documents
  • Supporting partnerships and collaborations related to education and training
  • Upholding TORG’s standards of professionalism, inclusivity, and ethical practice

Time Commitment

The expected time commitment is structured and manageable:

  • Weekly:
    • Approximately 1-2 hours, depending on preparation and assigned tasks
  • Monthly:
    • One (1) scheduled committee meeting
    • Participation in two (2) educational webinars per month
  • Overall commitment:
    • Approximately 4-5 hours per month, with flexibility based on role and availability

Appointments are for an initial one-year renewable volunteer term, subject to active engagement.
