💭 This World Hand Hygiene Day highlights a simple but powerful truth at the heart of safe care: “SAFER CARE STARTS WITH CLEAN HANDS.” This day we celebrate the simple, powerful act that sits at the heart of safe surgery.

The WHO’s “My 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene” define critical points for infection prevention: before touching a patient, before aseptic procedures, after body fluid exposure, after touching a patient, and after touching patient surroundings.

Strengthening hand hygiene practices remains a key focus in improving patient safety and outcomes in healthcare settings. Evidence shows that when effective hand hygiene is consistently practiced and combined with structured safety tools like the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC), surgical site infections can reduce by up to 50%, with overall mortality reductions of about 32%.

Programs such as Clean Cut, which integrate hand antisepsis with the SSC, have demonstrated significant improvements in surgical outcomes, including a 49% reduction in SSIs, with infection rates decreasing from 28.4% to 12.1% across multiple low-resource settings.

Every moment of proper hand hygiene, every checklist completed, and every mindful pause before patient contact contributes directly to safer care.

This World Hand Hygiene Day, we reaffirm the message:
“𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀”
“𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀”
