In October 2024, NYU Langone surgeons performed the worldโs first fully robotic double lung transplant using small incisions between the ribs instead of a traditional open approach. (NYU Langone, 2024)

Double lung transplantation is among the most technically demanding operations in cardiothoracic surgery. On October 22, 2024, NYU Langoneโs team completed the entire double-lung transplant with a Da Vinci Xi robotic system, aiming to reduce surgical trauma and postoperative pain through minimally invasive access. (NYU Langone, 2024)

NYU Langone reports the robot was used at each stage: removing the diseased lungs, preparing the surgical site, and implanting both donor lungs through small intercostal incisions (between the ribs). (NYU Langone, 2024)

The procedure was led by Dr. Stephanie H. Chang, Surgical Director of NYU Langoneโs Lung Transplant Program. The recipient was a 57-year-old woman with COPD, and the operation took place four days after she was added to the lung transplant list (NYU Langone, 2024)

Robotic surgery has steadily moved from niche applications toward high-complexity fields as technology and training evolved. This โfully roboticโ double lung transplant represents a new frontier for minimally invasive techniques in transplantation. (Lanfranco et al., Ann Surg, 2004).

While such procedures currently happen in highly resourced centers, the direction of travel matters: techniques that reduce morbidity and improve recovery can ultimately influence standards, training pathways, and scalability. In global surgery, the need is urgent. An estimated approximately 5 billion people lack access to safe, affordable surgical and anesthesia care when needed, disproportionately affecting LMICs (Meara et al., Lancet, 2015).

If robotics can make even the most complex transplants less invasive, the next question is bigger than technology:
How do we ensure these breakthroughs translate into wider access, not wider inequity? (Meara et al., Lancet, 2015)
Thatโs where The Operating Room Global (TORG) matters, connecting operating room professionals worldwide to share knowledge and build collaboration that moves innovation toward equity.
