Yet, he refused to give up. Four years later, in 1967, Starzl achieved the first long-term survival after a liver transplant, proving it could be done. His persistence and groundbreaking research into immunosuppressive drugs – first azathioprine and steroids, later paving the way for cyclosporine, turning organ transplantation from an โimpossible dreamโ into a life-saving routine procedure.
